Qian Li
I'm a Chinese photographer currently based in the United States.
A few years ago, I came here to study and found myself navigating an entirely new culture. Photography became my way of making sense of this experience—a tool to capture moments and bridge the distance between home and here.
Food has been my gateway to understanding this place. I'm endlessly curious about flavors I've never tried, and when something surprises me, I document it. At home, while cooking, I became fascinated by the simple beauty of ingredients—their textures, colors, the way light transforms them. This curiosity led to my still life work, where ordinary objects reveal unexpected qualities.
I'm drawn to hands-on processes. Printmaking appeals to me because I'm involved in every step of creation. This interest naturally led to photogravure, a 19th-century technique that transforms photographs into tactile prints, merging historical craft with contemporary vision.
My cats keep me company while I work, quiet reminders that the best observations often happen in stillness.
Through my lens, I explore the space between cultures, between the everyday and the extraordinary—always asking what it means to truly see.
